Many mystery shopping programs are designed around national chains, and few providers publish a price before you get on a sales call. But mystery shopping can be just as useful for an independent restaurant, a single retail store, a clinic, or a small group of locations.
This guide is for Vancouver and Lower Mainland business owners who want to know what actually happens when a real customer walks through the door and nobody from management is watching.
What mystery shopping actually is
A mystery shopper is a real person who visits your business as an ordinary customer, pays like everyone else, and then writes up what happened. It covers when they walked in, how long it took to be acknowledged, what staff said, whether the product or meal matched what was promised, and how checkout went.
"Secret shopper" means the same thing, and plenty of Vancouver owners search for it that way. We covered the terminology in secret shopper vs. mystery shopper.
The point is simple. You cannot see your own business the way customers do. Staff may behave differently when the owner is in the building, and customers do not always tell you when something went wrong. Sometimes they simply do not come back.
Why a local secret shopper matters in Vancouver
A local shopper understands the context around a visit. A Saturday afternoon in Kitsilano can look very different from a Tuesday afternoon in Richmond. Parking, transit, neighbourhood traffic, and customer expectations can all affect the experience.
The Lower Mainland is also not one market. A retail store in Metrotown, a dental clinic in North Vancouver, and a restaurant in Gastown serve different customers in different environments. The shopper should fit the customer you are actually trying to understand. Local details and booking are on our page for hiring a secret shopper in Vancouver.
What can a Vancouver business ask a shopper to check?
You decide what the visit focuses on. A few examples:
Restaurants. Were guests greeted quickly? Were specials mentioned? Did anyone check on the table after the food arrived? How long did the bill take?
Retail stores. Did staff know the product? Were they on their phones? Were current promotions mentioned? Did anyone suggest an add-on?
Clinics. How did the phone booking go? How was the reception experience? How long was the wait? Were fees and next steps explained clearly?
The more specific your questions, the more useful the report.
BC-specific things worth checking
A few areas are specific to doing business in British Columbia. A mystery shop observes and reports what a customer experienced. It is not a regulatory audit, but it can show you whether your own policies hold up in practice.
Liquor service. If you serve alcohol, a shopper can note your ID-checking practices, whether water or food was offered when appropriate, and how staff handled service as the visit went on. These are useful operational checks alongside your Serving It Right training and house policies.
Cannabis retail. The legal age to purchase non-medical cannabis in BC is 19. A shopper can document the customer experience around entry, ID checks, staff interactions, product questions, and checkout. We do not send minors into stores, and mystery shopping is not a substitute for regulatory compliance testing.
Privacy. Most private-sector businesses in BC are governed by the province's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) when collecting, using, and disclosing personal information. If staff collect customer information during booking, intake, or checkout, a shopper can document what they were asked for and what explanation was given.
Healthcare and dental front desks. For clinics, the experience often starts with a phone call. Booking clarity, wait times, and how fees are explained matter as much as the visit itself. More on that here.
What it costs
Most providers will not tell you until you book a call. We publish ours:
- Single mystery shop: $149 per visit
- 3 Mystery Shops: $399.99 for three visits within 30 days
- Complete Review: $719 for six in-person visits
There is no setup fee and no contract. Reports arrive in 7 to 14 days. If a visit requires a purchase, such as a meal or a retail item, the shopper is reimbursed what they spend, up to the budget you set at booking, and anything unused is refunded to you. The full breakdown of what drives price is in our cost guide.
One visit or several?
One visit is a snapshot of one shift on one day. It is often enough to surface something you did not know, and it is a reasonable way to find out whether this kind of information is useful to you.
Three visits across a month show you whether a problem is a bad day or a pattern. If you run more than one location, for example one in Vancouver and one in Surrey, the more useful exercise is comparing them on the same criteria. We wrote about how to do that here.
What you get back
A typical in-person report includes:
- The date, day of week, and time of the visit
- A step-by-step account in the order things happened
- Specific, checkable observations. For example, "Waited four minutes before anyone acknowledged me," not "service was slow."
- Answers to the specific things you asked the shopper to watch for
- Photos where relevant and where they could be taken discreetly

Common questions
Is mystery shopping available outside Vancouver?
Yes. Vancouver and the Lower Mainland are home base, and we book shops in other provinces as well. Our published Canadian pricing applies across Canada.
Will my staff know it is a mystery shop?
No. The shopper behaves as an ordinary customer. Some owners tell their team that visits may happen from time to time without saying when. Others keep the program entirely confidential.
How quickly can a Vancouver shop happen?
Most single shops are completed and reported within 7 to 14 days of booking. Tight requirements, such as a specific evening or a specific shopper profile, can take longer to fill.
Can you shop my competitor instead of my own business?
Yes. Competitive shops follow the same process and produce the same report. They are a straightforward way to see what you are being compared against.
